Antiphospholipid antibodies in cerebral ischemia.
In a 2-year prospective study of 146 patients with cerebral ischemia, we compared vascular risk factors for stroke with clinical and laboratory findings, particularly antiphospholipid antibodies. Ten patients (6.8%) were positive for at least one antiphospholipid antibody; one patient had systemic lupus erythematosus, one had rheumatoid arthritis, and the remaining eight fulfilled criteria for ...
متن کاملClinical and laboratory findings in patients with antiphospholipid antibodies and cerebral ischemia. The Antiphospholipid Antibodies in Stroke Study Group.
We reviewed the clinical and laboratory data of 128 patients with cerebrovascular disease and antiphospholipid antibodies. Cases were evenly divided between men and women, and the mean age of the study group was 46 years. Cerebral infarction occurred in 97 patients, and transient hemispheric ischemic attacks without stroke were recorded in 19; 12 suffered ocular ischemia. Systemic lupus erythem...
متن کاملCerebral haemostasis and antiphospholipid antibodies.
One of the major clinical concerns of the antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) is the propensity of antiphospholipid (aPL) antibodies to cause thrombosis in both the large and small vessels of the brain. In this article, we review the current understanding of haemostasis in cerebral circulation and discuss this in the context of antiphospholipid antibodies. The systemic-defect-local-phenotype parado...
متن کاملCerebral venous sinus thrombosis and antiphospholipid antibodies.
We report two cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis associated with an antibody to phospholipids, namely the lupus anticoagulant. Both patients later developed further immunologically mediated conditions. The importance of screening for the lupus anticoagulant in addition to anticardiolipin antibodies in this condition and the need for follow-up of such patients is discussed.
متن کاملChurg—Strauss syndrome associated with antiphospholipid antibodies in a patient with recurrent myocardial and cerebral ischemia
We report on a case of Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) associated with the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies. The patient had a history of recurrent myocardial infarction and presented with acute ischemic cerebral disease. Eosinophilia with typical lung and skin lesions led us to diagnose the patient with CCS. We hypothesize that the presence of antiphospholipid antibodies significantly cont...
